Focimetry Flashcards
What is another name for the focimeter?
lensometer
What does a focimeter measure?
- axis and power of spectacles and CL
- can find optical centre and power and base direction of any prism in unknown lenses
How is the vertex power of the lens usually measured with manual focimetry?
by taking the inverse of the focal length of the unknown lens
How can chromatic aberration be eliminated in manual focimetry?
green light used
What are 3 components of the manual focimeter?
- moveable illumination target
- viewing telescope
- fixed collimating lens (renders light parallel)
What is the overall method of using the manual focimeter? 3 key points
- ensure eyepiece is focused and target seen sharply focused
- insert unknown lens
- spectacles should be mounted with back surface of lens against rest to measure BVD
What part of spectacles should be mounted against the rest of a manual focimeter?
back surface - to measure back vertex power
How is manual focimetry performed for simple spherical lenses?
dial (this moves target backwards or forwards) until the graticules are sharp, and read off the power
How is manual focimetry performed to calculate cylindrical power?
- target is rotated, as well as dialled, until **one set of lines is sharp. **
- the reading is noted.
- the target is then dialled again until the **other lines are sharp. **
- the difference in these two readings is the cylindrical power
- the axis of the cylinder is read fom the dialling wheel
How can prismatic power be seen from manual focimetry?
- can be seen fom deviation of the light target from the central measurement position within the focimeter
How will a lens with a ground prism displace the cross image of a manual focimeter for base up prism?
displaces image downwards
How will a lens with a ground prism displace the cross image of a manual focimeter for base down prism?
displaces image upwards
How will a lens with a ground prism displace the cross image of a manual focimeter for base in prism?
displaces image outwards
How will a lens with a ground prism displace the cross image of a manual focimeter for base out prism?
dispalces image inwards
How can bifocal addition be measured using a manual focimeter?
turn spectacles around to measure front vertex power; difference between the front vertex power of the distance and near portions is the bifocal add
