What’s fluorosis ?
hypoplasia of dental enamel resulting from the prolonged ingestion of drinking water containing high levels of fluoride, developed during the time of tooth formation and manifested in form of mottled enamel
What’s causes fluorosis ?
Excessive intake of fluoride over an extended period of time
Develops in endemic areas with high level of fluoride in drinking water
Tooth paste and mouthwash contain fluoride
Fluoride overdose espicially children’s
Severity of mottling increases with the increasing amount of fluoride in the water
What clinical manifestation?
Very mild : Small opaque white pits or flecking areas covering less than 25% of tooth surface
Mild : Opaque white areas covering less than 50% of the tooth surface
Moderate : All tooth surfaces affected with opaque spots Marked wear of biting surfaces Brown stains can be present
Severe : tooth surface affected discrete or cofluent pitting brown stains
What’s the diffntial diagnosis ?
Enamel hypoplasia
Chalky form dental caries
What’s treatment options ?
Mild : no treatment
Moderate , severe :
1. Tooth whitening
2. Composite resin
3. Veeners
