Fluids And Transport Flashcards
1
Q
What are the three fluid compartments?
A
Intracellular
Interstitial
Plasma
2
Q
What is hypertonic fluid? What effects of consumption on fluid compartments?
A
A fluid with greater osmotic potential than plasma.
Causes plasma to become more conc., and therefore also interstitial fluid. Cells therefore lose water.
3
Q
Name an important ion transporter that maintains a gradient between intracellular and interstitial fluids?
In what direction does it transport?
A
Sodium-potassium ATPase.
K+ into cell
Na- out
4
Q
What is the cause and function of plasma oncotic pressure?
A
Impermeant proteins as anions in plasma.
They offset the hydrostatic pressure of the circulation which forces water out of plasma into ISF.
