Fluids Flashcards

1
Q

What are fluids?

A

A substance that has the capacity to flow and assume the form of the container into which it has been poured

Q

Particles of a liquid

A

Close together and are held together by weak forces of attraction. The particles can slide all over each other and take on the form of a container

Q

Particles of gas

A

Much further apart and are not bound together by forces of attraction. They move in all different directions and take up its whole container

Q

What substances can be fluids ?

A

Liquid because it assumes the shape of a glass cause the forces of attraction are not as strong

Gas because no forces of attraction exist between the particles. Air moves around the respiratory system, occupying all available space

Q

What fluid can be hard to identify?

A

Gases or liquid that are mixtures with solids in a suspension. (They are still fluids because they flow (also colloids) ex: smoke)

Gels and pastes that take on the form of their containers are also fluids. Ex: tooth paste

Sand is not a fluid. It flows but it is not continuous. It also forms a pile and does not necessarily take the form of its container.

7
Q

What is a compressible fluid ?

A

A fluid who’s volume can change in response to a change in pressure. Gases are compressible fluids.
Gases take up all the space in a given container. If you change the size of the container the gases volume will change.

Q

What is an incompressible fluid?

A

A fluid who’s volume cannot change.
Liquid are incompressible
The molecules are already very close together. The volume canot change even with a change in the size of container.

What is surface area?

A

The surface dimension of the object that is applying the force

18
Q

What happens if the surface area where the force is being applied increases?

A

Decrease in pressure

19
Q

What happens if the surface area exposed to the force decreases?

A

Increase in pressure
