Biotechnology Flashcards
What is biotechnology?
The collection of technologies that are applied to living organisms or substances derived from living organisms in order to meet a need or want
Manipulates the living organism to meet a specific need
Traditional biotechnology
Been around since early human history. They include agriculture, breeding and food
Selective breeding
The technique of increasing the presence of desired traits within a population over many generations
What is an enzyme
Protein molecules in cells which work as catalysts. Enzymes speed up chemical reactions in the body
Modern biotechnology
Last 300 years
Includes medicine, industrial production, the environment …
Genetic transformation
A change in the chemical make up of the organism to adapt to a specific need or want created by humans
Gmo
Gmo- genetically modified organism
A living organism that has had its DNA modified through genetic transformation to provide it with traits it would not otherwise posses
Genetically modified plants
- resistance to herbicide
- resistance to insects
- improved quality of oils
- increase certain nutritional substances
- reduction of allergic effect
Genetically modified animal
- increase in growth rate (salmon)
- less harmful manure (pigs)
- produce lactose free milk (cow)
Gmo benefits
- can produce desired results after only one generation.
- Can transfer a useful gene from one species to another.
- Could establish a gene bank.
- Can improve harvests due to the development of GMO’s that are resistance to herbicides and insects.
- Can produce more nutritional foods.
- can produce less allergenic foods

What is pasteurization ?
A process whereby food is heated for a period of time in order to destroy harmful microorganisms
Why do we use pasteurization
To prevent the proliferation of harmful microorganisms in food
3 main reason for pasted
- provide healthier food
- prolong the shelf life of foods
- preserve the nutritional properties of food
What is a concerne about pasteurization
Can destroy elements in food, such as good bacteria and vitamins
