FLUIDS Flashcards
When would you give HYPO solution?
need fluids in the cells
diabetic ketoacidosis hyperglycemia
DO NOT give with intracranial pressure or burns. will cause brain swelling
when would you give a HYPERtonic solution
+3 pitting edema
Not used as often
need fluid to leave cells and go back into vascular space
sodium loves water. hyponatremia
cererbral edema
when would you give an isotonic solution
To increase extracellular fluid /vascular space
Dehydration Blood Loss Surgery Diarrhea to expand blood volume but we do NOT want the solvent to go into the tissues
Parenteral Nutrition
Central line TPN
Peripheral PPN
Symptoms of Fluid volume overload
SOB dyspnea pulmonary edema crackles orthopnea increased RR Jugular vein distention JVD peripheral edema increased BP increased HR, bounding pulse weight gain decreased urine output
What patient will have an increased chance of Fluid volume overload
CHF, use EID to regulate
TPN
more than 2000 kcal
central line
hypertonic
more than 7 days
PPN
less than 2000 kcal peripheral vein isotonic short term not complete
what to monitor with PPN and TPN
I and O daily weight daily labs infection at site expiration
how often are IV’s changed
90 hours to 5 days
