Fluids Flashcards
Anything that flows.
Fluid
What are the two types of fluids?
Liquids and gases.
The state of matter that has a definite shape and volume. Its particles are close together and the particles can only move from vibrations.
Solid
The state of matter that has a definite volume, but its shape is determined by its surroundings. Liquids can slip and slide.
Liquid
The state of matter that has its shape and volume determined by its surroundings. The particles of a gas are very fast, far apart, and can go against gravity.
Gas
The change from solid to liquid. This is done by adding heat to a solid.
Melting
The change from liquid to gas. This is done by adding heat to a liquid.
Evaporation
The change from gas to liquid. This is done by removing heat from a gas.
Condensation
The change from liquid to solid. This is done by removing heat from a liquid.
Solidification
The change of state when a solid turns into gas without first turning into a liquid. This is done by adding heat to a solid.
Sublimation
The temperature at which something starts to vaporize rapidly.
Boiling Point
What is the boiling point of gold?
2,700 degrees celsius.
The temperature at which a substance changes state from a solid to a liquid.
Melting Point
What is the melting point of gold?
1,064 degrees celsius.
The temperature at which a substance changes state from a liquid to a solid.
Freezing Point
What is the freezing point of gold?
1,064 degrees celsius.
The “thickness” or “thinness” of a liquid. High viscosity is thick, low viscosity is thin.
Viscosity
Name two fluids with high viscosity.
Honey & maple syrup
Name two fluids with low viscosity.
Juice & milk
The time it takes a fluid to flow from one point to another.
Flow Rate
It is hard for the particles in a liquid to pass by each other.
Resistance to Flow
Name a fluid with lots of resistance to flow.
Ketchup
List five substances that have a low viscosity.
Water,juice,milk,tea,and lemonade.
List five substances that have a high viscosity.
Honey, maple syrup, ketchup, gravy, and corn syrup.
What is the effect of temperature of a liquid?
Temperature affects the speed at which a liquid flows. Hotter = Less Viscous, Colder = More Viscous
