Cells Flashcards
The organelle that makes energy for the cell.
Mitochondria
The organelle that captures energy from the sun and uses it to create food.
Chloroplast
This organelle surrounds and protects the contents of the cell. It also controls what can leave and enter the cell.
Cell Membrane
A structure in a cell that has a specific job to do.
Organelle
The organelle that stores food, wastes, and other substances that a cell can’t use right away.
Vacuole
This takes up a large part of the cell, and is a jelly-like watery fluid.
Cytoplasm
A large, dark, round structure that controls a cell’s activities.
Nucleus
This organelle is only in plant cells. It is thick, rigid, and made up of cellulose.
Cell Wall
Some things can pass through and others can’t.
Selectively Permeable
When a cell divides and becomes two cells.
Mitosis
It is small and alive, and can perform the functions of life.
Cell
An instrument that makes things look bigger by bending light through a lens.
Microscope
How many cells are in the average human body?
37 trillion.
What are the seven characteristics of life?
Movement, Reproduction, Growth, Response, Excretion, Exchange of gases, Nutrition
What happens if an egg is placed in corn syrup?
It will get smaller.
Why does an egg become smaller when placed in corn syrup?
Water moves from higher concentration to lower concentration. Because the egg has a higher concentration of water, water will move out of it.
What happens if an egg is placed in water?
It will get bigger.
Why does an egg become bigger when placed in water?
Water moves from higher concentration to lower concentration. Because the egg has a lower concentration of water, water will move into it.
Where does water move to?
It moves from higher concentration to lower concentration.
