Density & Buoyancy Flashcards
The amount of matter in a substance.
Mass
Mass divided by volume. Is the amount of mass in a certain volume of a substance.
Density
The upward force acting on an object displaced in a fluid.
Buoyant Force
The buoyant force acting on an object is equal to the weight of the fluid that it displaces.
Archimedes’ Principle
When the amount of force pulling down an object (gravity) is equal to the amount of force pushing it up (buoyancy).
Neutral Buoyancy
When an object moves fluid out of a container that it is submerged in.
Displacement
The amount of space occupied by an object.
Volume
The force of gravity on an object. 9.8 Newtons per kilogram.
Weight
Why does a whole tennis ball float lower than a half tennis ball?
Because a whole tennis ball has a higher density than half of a tennis ball.
2 items denser than water.
A bowling ball & a ship anchor.
2 items less dense than water.
A rubber duck & a foam block.
Formula for density.
D = m/v
Formula for mass.
m = D x v
Formula for volume.
v = m/d
