Fluid Mosaic Model Flashcards
What does the Fluid Mosaic Model show?
The arrangement of molecules in the membrane.
What do the phospholipid molecules form?
A continuous, double layer (bilayer).
Roughly, how thick is the phospholipid bilayer?
7nm.
Why is the bilayer ‘fluid’?
As the phospholipids are constantly moving.
What 2 molecules are found within the bilayer?
Cholesterol and Protein molecules.
Where are the cholesterol molecules found?
Within the bi-layer.
Where are the protein molecules found?
Scattered through the bi-layer.
What are Glycoproteins?
Proteins which have a polysaccharide (carbohydrate) chain attached.
What are Glycolipids?
Lipids with a polysaccharide chain attached.
Describe the properties of the head in the phospholipid arrangement.
-Phosphate
-Hydrophilic Head
-Is polar so it’s attracted to water.
-Has a charge.
Describe the properties of the tail in the phospholipid arrangement.
-Fatty Acids
-Hydrophobic
-Non polar so repels water.
What does a Surface Membrane provide for the cell?
-Barrier between cell & Environment.(control)
-Partially Permeable for diff, osmosis and AT.
-Allows recognition by other cells and cell communication.
-Plasma membrane
What does a Inner Membrane provide for the cell?
-Surrounds organelles, dividing into different compartments. (Barrier)
-Form vesicles to transport substances.
-Partially Permeable.(Control)
-Can be the site of chemical reactions.
