Fluid Mosaic and Transport Flashcards
Why is the bilayer fluid in fluid mosaic model?
This is because the phospholipids are constantly moving
what is in a phospholipid molecule?
a phosphate molecule attached to a glycerol to 2 fatty acids.
Which parts of the phospholipid are hydrophobic and hydrophilic?
hydrophilic phosphate head.
hydrophobic fatty acid tail,.
Why is it referred to as the mosaic?
Because the proteins are scattered around in the cell membrane like tiles
Why does the phospholipid bilayer not allow water soluble subtances through it?
As the head that is hydrophillic faces outwards and the tail which is hydrophobic is in the centre which means water is repelled by the centre of the bilayer
What does hydrophobic tail of a phospholipid do?
It repels water
What does the hydrophillic head of a phospholipid do?
It attracts water
What is the purpose of cholestoral in the cell membrane?
It keeps the phospholipids from moving. It also makes the cell membrane less fluid and keeps it rigid.
