Cell Recognition and Immunity Flashcards
what is immunity?
the ability of an organism to resist a particular infection or toxin
what is a phagocyte
(macrophage) is i a white blood cell that carries out phagocytosis
what is phagocytosis?
the englufment of pathogens
what do phagocytes do?
activate the T-cells
what is a T cell?
a lymphocyte which is a white blood cell
what do T-cells do?
they activate B-cells which divide into plasma cells by mitosis
what do plasma cells do?
make more antibodies to a specific antigen
how many types of immune responses are there?
humoural and cellular immune response (2)
explain cellular response
the t cells and other immune system cells that they interact with.
explain the humoral response
the B- cells and the production of antibodies from the humoral response.
What is a pathogen?
A microorganism that causes disease
How do phagocytes recognise pathogens?
Cell receptors on the phagocytes surfaces recognises the antigen in the pathogen.
Describe the function of antibodies?
Bind pathogens together which allows phagocytes to engulf many pathogens at once.
