Fluid mechanics Flashcards
Fluid mechanics
Dynamic fluid force
Drag force
A force that acts in opposition to motion
What are the two types of drag
Surface drag
Form drag
What are the 3 factors that can reduce and increase drag
1) Velocity of the moving body
2) Cross sectional area of the moving body
3) Shape and surface characteristics of a moving body
The velocity of a moving body
Streamlining
Involves shaping a body so it can move as effectively and quickly through fluid as possible
The cross-sectional area of the moving body
The shape and the surface characteristics of a moving body
Bernoulli principle
Where air molecules exert less pressure the faster they travel and more pressure when they travel slower
Lift force
Causes a body to move perpendicular to the direction of travel
Angle of attack
The tilt of a projectile relative to the air flow
What happens to the pressure at the high velocity of air according to the Bernoulli principle
Low pressure
What happens to the pressure at the slow velocity of air according to the Bernoulli principle
High pressure
