What is fluid status?
eu/hypo/hypervolaemic
Signs of hypovoloaemia?
high HR, low BP, incr RR, post hypotension, cool peripheries, reduced urine output
Signs of hypervolaemia?
peripheral oedema, inspiratory crackles, raised JVP
What are sources of fluid in hospital setting?
TPN, NG feed, IV meds
Examples of crystalloids?
0.9% saline, dextrose, hartmann’s solution
When are colloids prescribed?
liver failure patients. crystalloids most typically used in most other cases
What are the indications for fluid prescriptions?
resus, maintenance, replacement, pregnancy, renal/liver failure
Why do you want someone to fast before a surgery? (both fluid and food)
reduce risk of aspiration on induction of anaesthesia
Indications for replacement fluids?
diarrhoea, excess urine, sweating, inflammatory losses due to burns sepsis, high stoma output
