Fluid Compartments And Solutes Flashcards
What is osmosis?
Movement of water down its own concentration gradient
Towards area of higher osmolarity
What is osmolarity?
Measure of the concentration of all solute particles in a solution
What is diffusion?
Spontaneous movement of a solute done a concentration gradient
What is a hypertonic solution?
Osmolarity of inpermeant solutes outside > inside
—> cell shrinks
What is a hypotonic solution?
Osmolarity of inpermeant solutes outside < inside
—> cell swells
What is an isotonic solution?
Osmolarity of inpermeant solutes outside = inside
—> cell volume is unchanged
Why don’t cells burst?
Na+K+ATPase pump
—> maintains Na+ conc. in cell —> no net movement of Na+ across the membrane
What is the University of Wisconsin (UW) solution for?
Cold storage solution for organ preservation
What 3 main factors serve to reduce cell swelling in UW-infused tissue?
Lack of Na+ or Cl-
Presence of extracellular impermeant solutes
Presence of a macromolecular colloidb (starch)
What is colloid osmotic pressure?
Pressure due to higher concentrations of plasma proteins inside the capillary than outside
What is hydrostatic pressure?
Pressure inside vessel due to the blood slow through the tissue
What is the relation between COP and Hydrostatic pressure in a normal capillary?
Hydrostatic pressure ~ COP
