Fluid Flashcards
1
Q
What is a Fluid?
A
Molecules are far enough apart that they can slide past each other
2
Q
Our Bodies are…
A
- 50-50% fluid
We lose fluid as we get older
3
Q
What is Fluid inside cells called?
A
- Intracellular Fluid
4
Q
Fluid Outside Cells
A
- Between cells
- Extracellular fluid
- Is in different compartments of our body
- In plasma
- In digestive secretions
5
Q
Body Fluids are Made of…
A
- Electrolytes:
- Charged particles that are dissolved in water
- Water with stuff dissolved in it
Also have an electrical charge to them which is important for the function
6
Q
Electrolytes are…
A
- Dissolved mineral salts - ions
- This electrical charge allows them to do what they do
7
Q
What do fluids do?
A
- Dissolve and transport substances
- Transports many water soluble nutrients
- Water insoluble substances are transported with the help of proteins
- Protect us:
- Cerebrospinal fluid cushions the brain and spinal chord
- Amnionic fluid protects a fetus
- Moisten us!
- Saliva, tears, mucus
- Help maintain body temperature
- Water isn’t east to heat
- Being mostly water helps keep us cool
8
Q
Sweating and Vasodilation
A
- When sweat evaporates it takes energy into the air causing us to cool down
- The heat energy leaves the body and goes into the air with fluid
- Also get flushed skin when you get hot, moves hot blood to the core so that heat can escape

Q
BONUS QUESTION:
A
Exudate helps keep wounds clean, is the nasty fluid that comes out of wounds
