what is the flow of labour?
it is the movement of people who participate in the workforce from one country to another
why has there been an increase in migration?
to seek better paying employment opportunities
where has the migration taken place?
from developing countries such as south asia, africa and latin america to the richer areas of north america, europe and the gulf states e.g. kuwait, qatar and UAE
how has international migration changed?
more people are moving overseas, there has been an increase by over 40% between 2000 and 2015
how have jobs affected movement for skilled workers?
highly skilled workers (ICT and medical workers) are moving to the more developed countries because wages and working conditions are better
how have jobs affected movement for unskilled workers?
they move to more developed countries to look for work because of unemployment or poor wages int heir own countries
what is ravenstein’s law of migration?
- most migrants move only a short distance
- process of absorption, when people surround a rapidly growing town and move into it
- process of dispersion
- each migration flow produces a counter-flow
- economic factors is the main cause of migration
