Flowers Flashcards
What is the role of flowers in flowering plants? (reporduction)
Flowers attract pollinators to make seeds, helping plants to reproduce and form the next generation.
What is the difference between “pollination” and “fertilization?”
Pollination pollens transfer from one flower to another whereas fertilization takes place after pollination is transferred successfully.
What is the difference between “wind pollinated” flowers and “insect pollinated” flowers?
The wind-pollinated flowers comprise light-coloured petals without a pleasant strong smell. The insect-pollinated flowers comprise brightly coloured petals with a pleasant strong smell.
What is special about the pollen grains in wind pollinated flowers?
The produced pollen grains are smaller and lighter, which can be carried by the wind easily.
What do all seeds need to germinate?
All seeds need water, oxygen, and proper temperature in order to germinate.
What is seed dispersal?
When plant seeds are transported to new sites for germination
What are 3 important reasons for seed dispersal?
- Promotes the survival of plant species.
- It allows plants to unfold in an extensive area.
- Prevents plants from competing for light, water, and nutrients from the soil
What are the 8 parts of the flower? (SOSSOPFA)
- Stigma
- Ovary
- Style
- Sepal
- Ovule
