Chemical Change Flashcards
What are the 3 characteristics of a physical change?
- No new substance
- Easily reversible
- Change in state
What are the 6 characteristics of a chemical change?
- New substance
- Not easily reversible
- Gas is produced
- Colour change
- A smell
- Heat is given off
How do you check is there is hydrogen?
Light a match and if it makes a ‘pop’ sound, H2 is present
How do you check is there is CO2?
Use lime water and if it goes cloudy, it is present
If the temperature increases…
it is exothermic and energy is given off
If the temperature decreases…
it is endothermic and energy is taken in
What is the law of conservation of energy?
energy cannot be created or destroyed, only transferred or transformed
What is corrosion?
Breakdown of metal when exposed to the environment
What is an example of a catalyst?
Salt
What are 3 things that revent rusting?
- Painting
- Adding oil or grease
- Galvanising
what is the formula for combustion?
fuel/coal + carbon dioxide ➡️
oxygen + energy
anerobic:
glucose ➡️ lactic acid + energy
