Flight Terminology Flashcards
Where do aircrafts fly?
In the first layer of air that surrounds the earth. the Atmosphere!
What is Altitude?
The height of any object away from sea level
How is aircraft altitude measured?
sensors on the outside of the aircraft measure the atmospheric pressure
this is translated to altitude above sea level by an instrument (altimeter) in the cockpit
What is atmospheric pressure?
the mass of the air is attracted to earth by gravity - giving it weight.
Because it has weight - air presses on things exerting pressure
Increase of Temperature
close to the surface where gravity is high, the large numbers of air molecules that are attracted lead to an increase in temp
Decrease in Temperature
High altitude where gravity is low, air molecules are spread out causing temperature decrease
The Four Forces
Thrust
Lift
Drag
