Flight Plan and Route Planning Flashcards
When must a pilot file an IFR flight plan?
Prior to departure or entering controlled airspace a pilot must file flight plan and receive clearance when wx is below VFR minimums. Should be filed at least 30 mins prior to departure to preclude a delay in receiving clearance from ATC
When can you cancel your IFR flight plan?
Any time the flight is operating in VFR conditions outside of Class A. Pilot must be aware when other procedures apply within certain airspace, such as TRSA, Class B/C, etc.
What is a composite flight plan?
A flight plan that includes VFR for one portion and IFR for another
What kind of equipment determines your “special equipment” suffix on an IFR flight plan? (AIM 5-1-8)
Six part answer
Rader beacon transponder DME equipment TACAN-only equipment RNAV equipment, e.g.; LORAN, INS Advanced RNAV - GPS, GNSS RVSM authorization
The requested altitude on a flight plan represents what altitude?
Initial requested altitude
What are the alternate airport requirements? (91.169c)
1-2-3 rule
Alternate required if destination weather is less than 2,000/3 for one hour before and after planned ETA. The alternate wx must be above the mins for published approaches or 600/2 for precision or 800/2 for non-precision. If no IAP, then wx must for descent from MEA, approach and landing under basic VFR.
What is the definition of the word ceiling?
The height above the earth’s surface reported as broken, overcast or obscuration, and not classified as thin or partial.
What mins are to be used on arrival at the alternate?
The mins specified for the IAP to be used.
What are preferred routes and where are they found?
Increases system efficiency and capacity. Found in the AFD.
What are enroute low altitude charts?
They provide aeronautical information for IFR flight below 18,000ft MSL. They are revised every 56 days.
What are enroute high-altitude charts?
For navigation at or above 18,000ft MSL. Revised every 56 days.
What are area charts?
Show congested terminal areas at a large scale. Revised every 56 days.
Where is information on NAVAID limitations found?
NOTAMS and AFD
What other useful information can be found in the AFD for route planning?
Enroute Flight Advisory Service
ARTCC
Aeronautical Chart Bulletins
Preferred IFR routes
Special notices - FSS, GADO, Weather Service phone numbers
VOR receiver checkpoints - locations and freqs
What are NOTAMs?
Notices to Airmen. Time critical aeronautical information. Includes info like primary runway closures, changes in NAVAID status, ILS’s, radar service availability, and other info essential to operations
