When is an instrument rating required? Four part answer. (61.3e, 91.157)
a. Under IFR
b. In wx conditions less than VFR flight mins
c. In class A
d. Under special VFR in class B,C,D,or E between sunset and sunrise
What are the recency-of-experience requirements to be PIC under IFR? (61.57) Three part answer.
a. Biennial flight review
b. To carry pax, 3 takeoffs and landings within 90 days (must be full stop at night)
c. 66HIT. 6 approaches within 6 months featuring holding and intercepting and tracking courses using nav systems
If IFR uncurrent, how do you become current again? (61.57, 91.109)
If uncurrent by 6 months or less, you can conduct the 66HIT under simulated instrument with a rated safety pilot. If beyond this period an instrument proficiency check must be given by DPE or authorized instructor.
What are the requirements to act as a safety pilot? (61.55, 91.109).
Three part answer.
a. Current medical
b. Must be at least a private pilot with cat/class rating
c. If flight is under IFR, must be instrument rated
