What is BasicMed?

A

AC 68-1 / Part 68
The FAA has issued new regulations that allow pilots to operate as PIC of certain covered aircraft without having to undergo the medical certification process under 14 CFR Part 67. The pilot and aircraft must meet certain prescribed conditions to operate under BasicMed. The regulations are effective May 1, 2017.

What are the requirements to fly under new BasicMed regulations?

A pilot must:
1. Hold a U.S. driver’s license.
2. Hold or have held a medical certificate issued by the FAA at any point after July 15, 2006.
3. Answer the health questions on the Comprehensive Medical Examination Checklist (CMEC).
4. Get a physical examination by any state-licensed physician, and have that physician complete the CMEC; keep the signed CMEC document.
5. Take an online medical education course and complete the attestations/consent to the National Driver Register (NDR) check. Keep the course completion document.

Explain the privileges and limitations of a pilot flying under BasicMed.

Pilots can conduct any operation that they would otherwise be able to conduct using their pilot certificate and a third-class medical certificate, except they are limited to:
1. Fly with no more than five passengers.
2. Fly an aircraft under 6,000 lbs maximum certificated takeoff weight.
3. Fly an aircraft that is authorized to carry no more than 6 occupants.
4. Flights within the United States, at an indicated airspeed of 250 knots or less, and at an altitude at or below 18,000’ MSL.
5. May not fly for compensation or hire.
