Flight Director, Autopilot Systems Flashcards
1
Q
Automatic Flight Control System (AFCS)
A
- AKA autopilot system
2
Q
Function of a basic Automatic Flight Control System (AFCS)
A
- Light GA aircraft capable of single-pilot IFR operation will most likely have a simple autopilot equipped to relieve the demand from the pilot.
3
Q
Single axis system - Roll only (auto pilot)
A
Only allows for heading to be maintain by the autopilot. Cannot hold pitch or attitude.
4
Q
Two axis system - Roll and Pitch
A
- Allows for attitude and heading to be maintained by the autopilot. More complex types have navigation tracking and instrument approach capabilities.
5
Q
Operation of a basic Automatic Flight Control System (AFCS)
A
Autopilot detects any difference between the desired and actual flight conditions and corrects them by adjusting roll, pitch, and trim controls.
- Small aircraft - electric motor to move control surfaces
- Larger aircraft - hydraulic actuators connected to control surfaces
6
Q
Limitations and cautions of a Automatic Flight Control system (AFCS)
A
- Pre-flight checks - check the correct functioning of the autopilot on the ground.
- Disconnected for take off and landing
- Requires monitoring - always note what mode you have selected by checking the annunciation panel. Do not rely on autopilot.
