What is the primary function of an exhaust system?
To safely direct the combustion byproducts (exhaust gases) out of the engine and away from the aircraft.
What is the exhaust manifold?
Collects the combusted gasses from the combustion chamber, and discharge them outside the plane through an exhaust pipe.
What is the importance of proper sealing of the exhaust manifold?
Carbon monoxide is produced from internal combustion. It is very dangerous which is why it is importance for a tight seal.
What do superchargers and turbochargers do?
Counteract the air density decrease with height by increasing the pressure and density of the intake air.
- Maintains engine performance with climbs into higher altitudes.
- Improves fuel efficiency
What is a turbocharger?
An exhaust driven turbocharger harnesses the energy form the engine’s exhaust gasses to increase the density of the intake air.
What are the two main components of a turbo charger?
- Turbine
- Compressor
Connected by a shaft.
What does a turbocharger do?
Utilises waste energy from exhaust gases.
Waste gate will gradually close to increase the amount of exhaust has into the turbine. Once the waste gate is fully closed any increase in altitude will result in a decrease in manifold pressure.
= Full throttle height
What is a super charger?
Achieves eh same goal as a turbocharger, but is mechanically driven - crankshaft.
- Operates at the same speed as the engine
What does a supercharger provide?
Increased air pressure whenever the engine is running.
What is a drawback of a supercharger?
Uses some of the engine’s power to operate, decreasing overall efficiency.
What are disadvantages of turbo and super charging?
- Complexity and cost - increased maintenance
- Lag - delay in power
- Weight - impacts performance and fuel consumption
- Heat - generates additional heat
- Mechanical stress - operates at higher pressures and temperatures
What are advantages of turbo and super charging?
- Increased engine power
- Improved high altitudes performance
- Fuel efficiency
