Q

When landing with a slats or flaps failure (ie one or the other, not both), we will always set the flaps lever to the Flaps 3 position: Why?

A

Because even with the flaps locked, we want to get as much slats out as possible (maximum slats achieved at the Flaps 3 position I think??).

Or with slats locked, we want to get the flaps out to the Flaps 3 position (I’m not sure what we don’t want to go for the Flaps full position. - possibly due to go-around performance?).

Q

What is a Rule of Thumb for what Flaps setting (Flaps FULL or Flaps 3) in the FMS PERFORMANCE APPROACH page?

A

If, following a flaps failure of some sort, the ECAM includes TAWS MODE OFF, then we should leave the PERF APCH FMS page in FLAPS FULL, not FLAPS 3.

Why?

Ref: FCOM/Procedures/Normal Procedures/Standard Operating Procedures/Descent Preparation:

It states:

In the case of a system failure, the ECAM can require a specific landing configuration. Select the correct landing configuration on the APPR panel.

  • Select CONF 3 on the APPR panel for landing in CONF 3
  • Select FULL for all other slats/flaps configurations.

My question: Above, when it says ‘..landing in CONF 3’. Does this mean that both the flaps and slats are in their correct positions for CONF 3? Or just that we set the flaps lever in the CONF 3 position?

What if the ECAM says to use CONF 3 for landing and it includes the instruction to turn the TAWS mode off?? I presume that for landing we only set the flaps lever as far as CONF 3 - but do we consider that actually have CONF 3? Or can we consider that we have an abnormal flaps/slats configuration that is not CONF 3, so therefore we select FULL in the PERF APPR panel??

Q

When you have a failure that affects landing performance and LDPA leads you to increase VApp, and to select CONF 3 in the APPR panel, when you program the APPR panel, which do you enter first: The new VApp or the CONF 3 check box?

A

I believe that you enter the new VApp and then you check CONF 3 in the APPR panel

… but need a reference. ??
