Flight Controls Flashcards
Secondary flight controls
Horizontal stabilizer
Slats and flaps
Multi function spoilers when used as speed brakes or spoilers
Dedicated ground spoilers
Operation of ailerons
Cables operated by control wheel that run to hydro mechanical actuators.
How are all but ailerons operated?
Fly by wire
How does fly by wire work?
Primary actuary control electronics P-ACE receives signals from control system in flight deck… This sends signals to power the surface actuators or PCUs… The ace is assisted by the FCM… FLIGHT CONTROL MODULE which provides software base assistance and connects flight controls to other systems.
What is PCU.
Power control unit
What is ACE
Actuator control electronics
FCM
Flight control module
What controls have higher level functions?
Elevator
Multi function spoilers
Rudder
Horizontal stabilizer
Describe the elevator
Electronically controlled and hydraulically actuated
Goes from pilot input or auto pilot… To ACE to PCU with inputs from the FCM for higher level functions
Higher level functions for pitch
Gain on airspeed…. as speed increases pitch deflection decreases
Thrust compensation…… With thrust changes pitch control is maintained.
AOL limiting…..does not allow plane to stall
Elements of the horizontal stabilizer
Electronically controlled and electrically actuated.
ACE……HSA (horizontal stab actuator
And the FCM FOR INPUT
Higher level functions of horizontal stab
Keep airplanes trimmed with auto pilot during deployment of speed brakes….
Prevent structural damage at high speeds.
Elements of the ailerons
Mechanically controlled and hydraulically actuated
Yoke moves cables which are attached directly to the hydraulic actuator to move controls.
No higher level functions.
Multifunction spoilers
Five panels per wing… Outer three are multi function and the inner two are ground spoilers only.
MFS multi function spoilers…. Roll assist, speed brakes and ground spoilers.
Speed brake auto retract when?
Flaps slats two or greater selected.
Speed less than 180
If power levers advanced above an angle of 70%
Speed brakes will not deploy in direct mode.
TLA thrust level angle
Yah control
Rudder… Is electronically controlled and hydraulically actuated
Controls to ACE to PCU with inputs from FCM
Higher level functions of rudder
Yaw damp
Turn coordination
Gain on speed. As speed increases rudder deflection decreases.
Slats and flaps
Electronic controlled and electrically actuated.
Actuator control electronic moves the power drive unit that moms the flaps.
Slats
Four per wing with two positions
Type of flaps
Four slotted follower flaps.. Two per wing
A sensor provides protection from asymmetrical settings.
Roll assist with MFS
Normal mode …… Scheduled as a function of airspeed and flap settings.
Direct mode….. Fixed gain applied independent of airspeed and flap setting.
Ground spoilers deployment and retract
Deploy with weight on wheels… Wheels spin up above 45 knots and TLA LESS THAN 26 degrees…
Retract when wheel speed is less than 45 for at least 5 seconds or if TLA goes beyond 35 degrees.
Primary flight controls
Ailerons and multifunction roll spoilers
