Flight Controls Flashcards
What is the PTU?
POWER TRANSFER UNIT
Power Transfer Unit
System A transfer of force to increase system B VOLUME to operate the leading edge devices at a NORMAL RATE
Looks for loss of EDP #2 Volume (ie loss of #2 engine)
Used in Auto Slats system
What is the LGTU?
LANDING GEAR TRANSFER UNIT
System B HYD fluid transferred to
Sys A to raise the Landing Gear at a NORMAL RATE
- LOSS OF #1 Eng RPM
- Airborne
- Landing Gear Handle up
- One or more main LDG not up and locked
(Second Segment Climb Perf)
Standby Hydraulic System powers…..
- Stby Rudder
- Stby Yaw Damper
- Thrust Reversers
- LE devices (extend only)
How does the STBY HYD Sys
AUTOMATICALLY activate?
Rudder Force/Fight monitor “trips” OR
Loss of HYD sys A or B with:
Flaps Down
In Flt or wheel spin 60kts or greater
How does the STBY HYD System
MANUALLY activate?
Either “Flight Control” Switch to Standby Rudder
OR
“Alternate Flap” Switch to ARM
(No Stby Rudder Light)
What does the FLIGHT CONTROL SWITCHES do on the overhead Flight Control Panel?
- STBY RUD ON-Activates STBY HYD PUMP
Opens Standby Rudder shutoff valve to pressurize Standby Rudder PCU - OFF-
Closes flight control shutoff valve isolating ailerons/elevator and rudder from associated HYD sys pressure - ON-
Normal operating position
What does the YAW Damper switch positions mean?
OFF- Disengages Yaw Damper
ON-
1. Engages main Yaw Damper to Main PCU if B Control switch is ON
2. Engages STBY Yaw Damper to STBY PCU if both A and B switches are in the STBY RUD position
Autoslats System
Extends LE slats from extend(sealed) to fully extended (slotted) as AOA approaches stall
Functions at flap settings 1,2 and 5
Activates prior to stick shaker
Return to EXT position automatically as AOA decreases
POWER SOURCES
NML- SYS B
Backup SYS A through PTU
System A provides power to pressurize SYS B fluid
AUTO SLAT FAIL (AMBER)
With MC Recall- failure of a single SMYD computer
Without recall-Auto Slat Sys Failure
Flap Load Relief
Protects Flaps against excessive force above limit speeds
Functions at flap settings 30 and 40
Flap 40 retract to 30 abv 163kts reext 158kts
Flap 30 retract to 25 abv 176kts reext 171kts
Functions at flaps 10,15,30 and 40
**Auto Speedbrake Ground Deployment
During landing, spoilers deploy AUTOMATICALLY if all the following occur:
1. Speedbrake Lever is in the ARMED position
2. SPEEDBRAKE ARMED light is illuminated abv CA ND
3. Radio alt less than 10ft
4. Landing gear strut compression on touchdown
5. Compression of ANY Landing Gear Strut enables the Flight Spoilers to deploy
6. Compression of the RIGHT main Landing Gear Strut enables the GROUND Spoilers to deploy
7. Both Thrust Levers are retarded to IDLE
8. Main Landing Great wheels spin up (above 60kts) OR
If a whell spin up signal NOT Detected when the air ground system senses ground mode (when any any gear strut compresses)
Alternate Flap & Slat Extension
TRAILING EDGE FLAPS
Needed in the event of a SYS B failure
Flap alternate function POWERED BY ELECTRIC MOTOR on AC Transfer Bus 2
Guarded ALTERNATE FLAPS MASTER SWITCH arms
Alternate Flaps position switch spring loaded to neutral must be held down to EXT Flaps
NO ASYMMEETRY PROTECTION with electric extension
LEADING FLAPS & SLATS
Same switches as above
Master ALTERNATE FLAPS SWITCH ENERGIZES STANDBY HYD PUMP
MOMENTARY ALTERNATE FLAPS position Switch to downfully extends LE devices
LE devices cannot be retracted by STBY HYD SYS
