Flight Flashcards
what are the important aspects that allow a bird to fly
streamlined feather design, special muscles and sternum for thrust, lightweight bones, streamlined shape, wings, and the flapping of the wings.
what is the difference between powered flyers, gliders, and floaters
floaters-they do not really fly the wind control the speed and direction of their flight ie. balloons
gliders-their wings interact with air currents and in still air will always finish lower than their beginning altitude ie. hang gliders
powered flyers- use an engine or body energy to fly or gain altitude ie. planes
how does a parachute work what forces are involved what are its parts
a parachute uses the forces of drag and gravity to slow down and soften a fall, it consists of a hole for stability, a canopy where the larger the surface area the slower you fall, and strings to connect the load to the chute.
how can you minimize air resistance
you can minimize air resistance by streamlining an object or making it into a smoother shape for air to flow around.
how does a hot air balloon work what about density and buoyancy
a hot air balloon works by pumping hot air into an envelope making it rise. This happens because the hot air is less dense than the cooler air outside it that it makes it want to naturally rise. the buoyancy is created by the difference in forces and is an upward force fluids give any object you toss in but less than the force of gravity.
what are the parts of a hot air balloon how is it direction controlled
a hot air balloon consists of a an envelope, a burner, a basket and a parachute valve. its direction is controlled by the wind but a pilot can move up or down to find the desirable wind
what is Bernoulli principle
this is the idea that an airfoil which has a curved top and flat bottom has slower air on the bottom creating high pressure and faster air on top creating low pressure and the high pressure air pushes towards the low pressure creating lift.
when something is in flight where is pressure the highest where is it lowest
when an object is in flight the highest pressure is below it with the lowest pressure above it
what is the name of a wing or rotor blades shape
airfoil
what are the four forces of flight
lift, gravity, thrust, drag
what is pitch how is it controlled
pitch is when the nose of a plane is either pushed up or down and is controlled by the elevator
what is roll how is it controlled
roll is when you change the roll of a planes wings either dipping to the left or right and is controlled by the ailerons
what is yaw how is it controlled
yaw is when the nose of a plane is made to turn left or right and is controlled by the rudder
how would you make a plane yaw left right
left- to yaw left the rudder must go left
right- to yaw right the rudder must go right
how would you make a plane pitch up down
up- to pitch up the elevators must go up
down- to pitch down the elevators must go down
