Flight Flashcards
What are the four forces of flight?
Lift thrust drag and gravity
True or false: Thrust and Drag work in opposite directions.
True
What is lift
Lift is the force that pushes the aircraft upward, while “Deflected Downwash” causes the wing to be deflected upward. Newton’s Third Law states that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.
How is weight different from mass?
Your mass is the same no matter where you go in the universe; your weight, on the other hand, changes from place to place.
True or False: Gravity and Lift work in opposite directions
True
Multiple Choice
What are the 3 axes
a) Yaw Pitch Gravity
b) Pitch Roll Yaw
c) Roll Lift Yaw
B
How do you reduce drag?
making the airplane more streamlined, the wings narrower, or by using new materials that make the surface more smooth
What causes 80% of lift
a) Bernoulli’s Principle
b) Deflected Downwash
B
Explain Bernoulli’s principle
Air moving over the curved upper surface of the wing will travel faster and thus produce less pressure than the slower air moving across the flatter underside of the wing
( faster the fluid goes lower the pressure and the slower the fluid goes higher the pressure)
how do planes wings work? (lift)
Airplane wings are shaped to make air move faster over the top of the wing. When air moves faster, the pressure of the air decreases. So the pressure on the top of the wing is less than the pressure on the bottom of the wing. The difference in pressure creates a force on the wing that lifts the wing up into the air.
Explain defelcted downwash
Deflected downwash is when air hits the bottom of the wing and pushes the wing up because of Newton’s 3rd Law
What are the 3 main flight controls?
The ailerons, elevator (or stabilator), and rudder
What are the 3 main movements of bird flight
Powerstroke, Backstroke, and Glide
Multiple choice: What is Newton’s Third Law
A) for every action there is an equal opposite reaction
b) faster moving air goes over the wing and slower moving air goes under
C) idk what to put here
A
What is drag
Drag is the force that resists movement of an aircraft through the air.
