Electricity Flashcards
What is a free electron?
The electrons that are not bound within the atom and free to move are free electrons
What is a conductor?
a material or device that conducts or transmits heat, electricity, or sound, especially when regarded in terms of its capacity to do this.
What is a insulator?
An electrical insulator is a material in which electric current does not flow freely
Is wood and glass insulators?
Wood and glass are insulators.
Is Silver Gold. Copper. Aluminum insulators?
No they are conductors
how is lightning formed?
Negative charges gather near the base of the cloud, while positive charges build in the top of the cloud.
three common types of lightning
three common types of lightning: cloud to ground, cloud to cloud and cloud to air.
What are the 2 main types of lightning
Sheet and Fork lightning.
What are the rule of static electricity
Static electricity will always want to flow from a higher voltage to a lower voltage.
Where does Sheet lightning appear
Sheet lightning is also known as intra cloud lightning so it happens inside the cloud.
Is lightning current or static electricity
Static
Where does Fork lightning appear
Fork lightning zig zags down to the ground. (Cloud to ground)
Difference between AC and DC power
Direct current (DC) flows in one direction, while alternating current (AC) changes direction periodically.
What 2 items can be good insulators
Plastic and Rubber
What is a good conductor
Metal
Usually a positive lightining strike has how many strikes
It usually has 1 strike
Usually a negative lightning strike has how many strikes
It usually has 2 or more
difference between series circuit and parallel
In a series circuit, the same amount of current flows through all the components placed in it. In parallel circuits, the components are placed in parallel with each other.
What are the 3 types of circuits
Simple circuits, Series circuits, and Parallel circuits
What are electrons?
Electrons are “subatomic” particles - “subatomic” means “smaller-than-atoms”. Electrons are also found in all atoms, and are never in the centre of the nucleus.
How do particles become positively or negative charged?
The particle can be positively charged if there are more protons than electrons
More Protons: positive
More electrons: negative
What is electricity
Electricity is a form of energy. It exists when free electrons move.
What is an electrical current
An electric current is a stream of charged particles, such as electrons moving through an electrical conductor or space
What is static electricity
Static electricity is when two objects are rubbed together and the objects acquire equal and opposite charges.
Name 3 renewable Energy sources
Hydro-Electricity
Solar Energy
Wind
What is geothermal energy
Geothermal energy is heat that is generated within the Earth. (Geo means “earth,” and thermal means “heat” in Greek.)
What is hydroelectricity
Hydroelectricity is electricity from incredibly fast flowing water
What is tidal energy
Tidal energy is power produced by the surge of ocean waters during the rise and fall of tides.
What is nuclear fusion
Nuclear fusion is the fusion of nuclei with a burst of energy
Name 3 NON renewable energy sources
Fossil Fuel
Natural Gas
Petroleum
What are some examples of fossil fuels
Coal and natural gases
What is Geo-thermal Energy
Geothermal energy is heat that is generated within the Earth.
What is Hydrogen electricity
Hydrogen fuel refers to hydrogen which is burned as fuel with oxygen.
What is solar electricity
Solar electricity is electricity from the sun to solar panels
