Biology Flashcards
Biotic vs Abiotic
Biotic factors include animals, plants, fungi, bacteria, and protists. Some examples of abiotic factors are water, soil, air, sunlight, temperature, and minerals.
How do we determine if something is really alive
they respire, move, respond to stimuli, reproduce and grow, and are dependent on their environment.
What are the 6 different kingdoms?
Eubacteria, Archae, Protista, Fungi, Plantae, and Animalia
What is in the animal kingdoms
Vertebrates and invertebrates
Name 5 vertebrates
FARMB - fish, amphibians, reptiles, mammals, birds
Name 6 invertebrates
SCWEAM - sponges, cnidarians, worms, echinoderms, arthropods, mullusks
What is a virus reproduction system?
AIPAR - attachment, injection, production, assembly, releave
Why do we think viruses are non-living
We think that because viruses need a host cell to reproduce so they are non-living
What are the 8 levels of classification
Domain Kingdom Phylum Class Order Family Genus Species
What is Taxonomy
Taxonomy is the practice and science of categorization or classification.
What does biodiversity mean to YOU
what are some things we can do to help biodiversity
Support the birds, reptiles, mammals, and plants that live around you, you can do this by planting milk weed, and other various plants for insects, and putting out bird feeders.
Reduce, reuse, recycle !
What is an Ecosystem
An ecosystem is a geographic area where plants, animals, and other organisms, as well as weather and landscape, work together to form a bubble of life
What is a Species
A species is a group of organisms that can reproduce with one another and create a fertile offspring
What is Genetics
Genetics is the study of genes, genetic variation, and heredity in organisms
Who is the father of taxonomy?
Carl Linnaeus
Explain why Diversity of Living Organisms is important
Biodiversity is essential for the processes that support life on Earth, Without it, we cannot have the healthy ecosystems that we rely on to provide us with the air we breathe and the food we eat.
What is the Diversity of living Organisms?
Biodiversity, refers to all of the variety of life that exists on Earth. Biodiversity can be described and measured at three different levels: species, genetic, and ecosystem diversity.
What are the 3 levels of biodiversity?
Ecosystem diversity, species diversity, and genetic diversity.
What does Ecosystem diversity mean?
Ecosystem diversity is defined as a form of diversity/difference between ecosystems within a geographical location.
What does Species Diversity mean?
Species diversity is defined as the number of different species present in an ecosystem and relative abundance for each of those species.
What does Genetic Diversity mean?
Genetic diversity is the biological variation that occurs within species.
What is Binomial Nomenclature?
Binomial Nomenclature consists of genus and species. For example, homo sapience. Homo is genus, sapien is species.
What are the 8 levels of classification in order?
Domain, Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species.
