Flexor Forearm Ch.13 Flashcards
General considerations of flexor forearm compartment
- attached to medial epicondyle via common flexor tendon
- flex the digits
- flex, abduct and adduct the hand at wrist
- assist pronation of hand by actively rotating the radius on the ulna
- to a lesser degree flex the forearm
- All innervated by Median N. (beside flexor carpi ulnaris, and flexor digitorum profundus)
supination vs. pronation (in regards to ulna vs. radius)
radius is on outside, ulna is on the inside. When pronation occurs the radius rotates around the humerus and the distal end ends up medially.
Pronator Teres
A: pronates and slightly flexes forearm
N: Median
Superficial Flexor Layer (from lateral–>medial)
pronator teres, flexor carpi radialis, palmaris longus, flexor carpi ulnaris
TRLU: TeResa’s LongUnderwear
Flexor Carpi Radialis
A: flexes wrist and abducts hand (radial deviation)
N: Median
“flexor goes to radial side”
Palmaris Longus
A: flexes wrist
N: median n
“something goes into palm and is long”
Flexor Carpi Ulnaris
A: Flexes wrist, adducts hand (ulnar deviation)
N: Ulnar N.
“flexor goes to ulnar side”
Intermediate flexor layer
Flexor Digitorum Superficialis
Flexor Retinaculum
- A specialization of deep fascia which spans the concavity created by carpal bones and forms the carpal tunnel
- (attached to trapezium and scaphoid laterally, the hamate/hamulus and pisiform medially)
- tendons of IM and deep layer as well as median nerve go through the carpal tunnel
Flexor Digitorum Superficialis
(long powerful muscle not attached to thumb - attaches to middle phalanges 2-5)
A: flexes proximal I-P joints. Assists in flexion of the M-P joints, wrist and forearm
N: Median N.
“power grip”
2 Flexors of Forearm not innervated by the Median N.
- Flexor Carpi Ulnaris
- Medial portion of Flexor Digitorum Profundus
Flexor Digitorum Profundus
- go to tips of fingers for precise flexion of fingers
A: flexion of distal IP joints; assists in flexion of proximal I-P, MP and wrist joints
N: lateral portion (digits 2/3)= median n.
medial portion (digits 4/5) = ulnar n.
“precise flexion”
Deep Flexor Layer
Flexor Digitorum Profundus, Flexor Pollicis Longus, Pronator Quadratus
Flexor Pollicis Longus
A: Flexes thumb
N: median n.
Pronator Quadratus
A: pronates hand
N: median n.
