What is forensic psychology
Forensic psychology is where psychology (the study of the mind and behaviour) meets the legal system.
Forensic Psychologists use their understanding of human
behaviour to:
-help solve crimes,
-understand criminal actions
-assist in legal matters.
Who may a forensic psychologist work with?
Police, Lawer, Judges
How may a forensic psychologist help the law?
to check if someone is mentally fit to stand trial and to know why someone may have committed crimes.
What criminal and civil matters may a forensic psychologist be involved in?
-Custody dispute
-Evaluate insurance claims
-Testify in civil lawsuits
-Evaluate child custody
-Investigate reports of child abuse
-Conduct visitation risk assessments
How does memory decay work?
As time elapses, memory can also become less accurate
Common research design types
Experimental: Tests cause and effect by changing one thing (a variable) and using random groups.
Correlational: Looks at how two things are connected but doesn’t show cause and effect.
Case Study: A close, detailed look at one person, group, or event.
What are the 3 stages of memory
Encoding, Storage, Retrieval

Process of converting information into a form that the brain can understand
Involves attention

Holding information over time.
Involves short-term and long-term memory.

Accessing stored information.
Can be through recall, recognition, or relearning.
Inatteninal blindness?
is the failure to notice something that’s obvious in front of you when your attention is engaged with something else.
Weapon focus?
Weapon focus is when, during a crime, witnesses’ attention is on the weapon, which distracts them from other details about the crime or features of the criminal.
