Flame photometry or atomic emission spectroscopy (AES) Flashcards

Q

AES- the instrument

A

look at ppt for diagrma

  • the flame is the sample holder, where the heat promote atoms to the excited stage which is then returned to the fundamental state by releasing (emitting) a photon of a specific wavelength

Q

AES- performance

A

Atomic emission- in flame photometry comes from atoms that are in an excited state because of the high thermal energy of the flame

No lamp us used in this experiment

Emission intensity is proportional to the concentration of the element in the sample

Q

what elements is AES most useful for

A

Most useful for the determination of Na, K, Li and Ca particularly in biological fluids and samples.
But it has been applied for almost half the elements of the periodic table. It allows quantitative and qualitative analyses
