fissure sealants Flashcards
what are fissure sealants made of?
unfilled resin
is the enamel damage during placement of fs?
no- fills pits and fissures without cutting enamel
what are the 3 outcomes of fissure sealants?
- eradicate deep fissures
- make teeth more cleansable with toothbrush
- caries prevention
what are the steps for fissure sealants?
- cleanse tooth
- isolate
- dry
- acid etch
- rinse
- dry
- isolate
- place fs
- cure
- check for deficiencies and check occlusion
what should be checked following fs
occlusion
air bubbles
bonded
smooth
hard/soft
what time of acid is used?
37% orthophosphoric acid
what does acid etch do?
creates microscopic pores in enamel creating mechanical retention
what are the 3 patterns of enamel etching?
- removes core- periphery intact
- removes periphery- core intact
- haphazard effect
what are the classifications of fissure sealants?
filled or unfilled
colour- translucent or opaque
how they’re cured- chemically or light cured or UV (uncommon)
why would you light cure?
more working time
no damage to retina
when are fs indicated?
- high caries risk
- deep fissures/pits
- newly erupted teeth
- caries- can halt caries if intact
- med compromised
- xerostomia
- manual dexterity
what is still the most important factor in caries prevention?
diet
OH
fluoride
what happens with
intact fs
leaking fs
- caries protection
- caries increases
