Fisheries, Conservation, Marine Reserves. Flashcards
Exam 2 Prep
What is fisheries science?
They estimate the amount of a marine product that can be harvested without jeopardizing the population for future harvest.
When did we realize that it is possible to exhaust ocean resources?
When we saw steep declines in large marine mammal populations.
What is a fishery?
The population of a marine product that is being harvested. This includes all harvested species- not just fin-fish we typically think of.
What is a stock?
The part of a biological population that is harvested for profit.
What is bycatch?
Species that were accidentally captured.
Even if bycatch is released, why is it still bad for released fish?
The stress from the capture may kill them, even after they are released.
What is the Maximum Sustainable Yield (MSY) and how does it work as a potential management plan?
This plan suggests harvesting populations in the exponential growth phase so they don’t hit carrying capacity. If they avoid hitting carrying capacity, they will continue high reproduction levels.
What are 4 general steps of the precautionary approach?
1) Consider future n _ _ _ s
2) Identify potential adverse o _ _ _ _ _ _ s
3) Plan corrective measures and an appropriate timescale
4) Periodic review
1) consideration of the NEEDS of the future
2) identifying potentially adverse OUTCOMES
3) planning CORRECTIVE MEASURES at appropriate timescale
4) PERIODIC REVIEW
Why would the precautionary approach not work? Hint: $
Economic pressure.
What is the 200mi Exclusive Economic Zone?
A 200mi zone where only US citizens can fish.
What does the National Marine Fisheries Service do?
They implement conservation laws and ensure fisheries comply.
What was the purpose of the Magnuson Stevens Act?
It established federal management of fisheries and restricted fishing in US waters.
What do regional management boards do?
Set levels of allowable catch.
What are marine reserves?
Government protected areas. Fishing is not allowed.
Why is the marine design size crucial?
Too small= does not protect intended species
Too large= does not allow stock to leave and seed surrounding areas.
