His early Challenge

  • Sailed on September 20, 1519, from the Atlantic to the future site of Rio del Nero in modern Brazil and traded goods.
  • Sailed to the South until Puerto San Julian because of a storm
    then experienced a mutiny where he sent to kill one leader,
    captured and executed another, and two were left behind
  • Santiago was wrecked while searching for a passage West
    and San Antonio deserted and sailed home.
  • Magellan discovered 350 strait bow called Magellan Strait.
  • Magellan called Mar Pacifico, a very calm see, now called
    Pacific Ocean.
  • The pacific Ocean was bigger than estimated that after some
    months, supplies ran out leaving them with wormed biscuits,
    eat rats, sawdust, leather, and drink yellow water.

    vegetables) tossed to the ocean and sharks followed the
    ships

  • He made cordial relations with Raja Humabon, the local leader,
    along with his wife, daughter, and 800 natives who agreed to be
    baptized through mass baptism.

Magellan death:

A

Zula from Mactan requested Magellan’s help against Chief Lapu-Lapu. The next day, Magellan brought 60 men but was outnumbered, leading to a retreat after burning the enemy village. He ultimately died in battle from a poisoned arrow to his leg.

After Magellan Death:

A

After retreating, Magellan’s former allies in Cebu ambushed and killed 30 of his men. With only half of the crew remaining, they burned the Concepcion and continued their search for the Spice Islands. They were awed by the splendor of the Muslim court in Brunei, and with local guides’ help, they finally reached the Maluku Islands. There, they traded everything for cloves to fill their two ships.

After reaching Spice island

A

The Trinidad needed repairs before departure, while many crew members fell ill and died during an attempted return across the Pacific. Captured by the Portuguese, Captain Elcano took the Victoria westward. After nine weeks of hardship and starvation, they found provisions in Cape Verde. On September 8, 1522, three years after leaving, only 18 of the original 270 crew members returned to Spain.

A

Magellan’s expedition proved global circumnavigation was possible, enhanced geographical knowledge, and confirmed the Earth’s roundness. It broke the Venetian trade monopoly and established Spain as a colonial power..
