Originally named Amenhotep IV, ruled from 1353-1336 bce. New Kingdom pharoh Founded new religion honoring single god, the life giving sun disk Aten. Akhenaten means literally “One who is effective on behalf of Aten”. Change in artistic convention to reflect new religion. Wife Nefertiti. Builds new capital between Giza & Thebes, names it Akhetaten. Period he rules in is known as Amarna Period. Artwork depicts him with elongated form, protruding stomach, feminine features.

His tomb was buried in 3 nested coffins, the innermost coffin made of solid gold. Tomb buried underneath another pharoh. Discovered by Howard Carter in 1922, who dismembered much of body by removing Tut from coffin.
