How did the European settlement start?
Began with Capatain James Cook’s visit and claim of possession in 1770. This was followed by the establishment of a penal settlement when what is now known as The First Fleet arrived at Sydney Cove in 26 January 1788.
How large was the impact of the European settlement on indigenous people?
It was first established through first conquering and killing Indigenous people. It is believed that the first 100 yeard of European settlement that over 20,000 Indigenous people were killed by colonial forces.
How did the indigenous people react to the European settlement?
Indigenous people had amongst them leading ‘restistance fighters’ who led their people’s efforts to evade and resist invaders. In WA, Calyute, Yagan and Weeip were among the leading Indigenous figures.
Was there a reconciliation towards the first interaction of indigenous people and European settlers?
In 1999, Prime minister John Howard passed a Motion of Reconciliation - a national step forward despite the controversial expression of “deep and sincere regret” for past injustice. The national sorry day followed this reconciliation.
