Incised
Laceration

What is an incised wound?
Clean cut with little damage to surrounding edges.
What is an avulsion wound?
Forcible separation of the tissue from its attachments.
What is a laceration?
Large irregular wound.
Considerable damage to skin & surrounding tissues.
What is a puncture wound?
Small external wound.
Deep penetrating wound to deeper layers.
What is an abrasion?
The epidermis is removed to expose the dermis.
What are the 2 types of closed wounds?
Haematoma & contusion
What is a contusion?
Burst/ruptured blood vessels under the skin.
Bleeding seeps into tissue & eventually clots.
A bruise.
What is a haematoma?
Blood loss forms a pocket in between tissues.
Pressure build up will stop continued bleeding.
What are some clinical signs of wounds?
Pain
Swelling
Haemorrhage
Shock
Visible disruption of skin
What are the main 5 steps of first aid treatment for wounds?
- Always treat for shock or any other major body system first.
- Stop any bleeding.
- When patient stable, clip around the wound.
- Clean the wound.
- Cover the wound & prevent patient interference.
