Fires are caused most often by
Human error
Fire triangle or tetrahedran
Fuel, oxygen, heat, chemical reaction.
While fueling
Use blower and close hatches.
LP Gas
Keep outside or in lazerette.
Oxygen
16% support combustion. 3% smoldering.
Heat
Friction, sparks, flames, circuits, lightening, reactions. Rags, compost.
Interfere with chain reaction
Dry chemical
Alpha
Creates an ash. Cool by breaking up and removing material.
Bravo
Bacon grease or boiling liquids. Smother to cut off air.
Charlie
Current or charge circuits. Turn off power first.
Delta
Dust or dry powder. Dry powder that reforms a crust that smothers fire.
Portable or fixed systems.
Fire extinguisher. Heat sets off fixed system.
Water
Alpha fires reduces heat. Navy all purpose nozzle. Power stream and fog. Forward off. Shuts off automatically. Low velocity fog adapter.
Foam
Creates a thick blanket. Alpha and Bravo freezes at 40 degrees.
CO2
Bravo Charlie. No residue. Removes oxygen and must be used in enclosed area. Following fire let it cool. Will lose charge. Must replenish after losing 10%.
Dry chemical
ABC, Universal. BC sodium or potassium bicarbonate. ABC ammonium phosphate.
Portables
2-30 lbs. 10-30 ft. 8-10 seconds. Labeled and CG approved. Know where to find in CFR.
Preventing fires
Shipshape and Bristol fashion. Be vigilant. Check bilges, blowers, briefing. Practice.
Fighting fires
Captain must be prepared. Prepare extinguishers and placement. Maneuver vessel, radio, move passengers with PFDs, firefight.
