What is a critical incident?
Any incident where the effectiveness of the police response is likely to have a significant impact on the confidence of the victim, their family and / or the community.
What is a major incident?
An event or situation, with a range of serious consequences, which requires special arrangements to be implemented by one or more emergency responder agencies.
What is a Casualty Bureau Incident Room?
The Casualty Bureau Incident Room is a central point where information regarding a major incident is received collated and assessed, it enables key or critical information to be identified at the earliest opportunity.
It is usually activated following a Major Incident/disaster which is likely to result in large numbers of casualties or a large number of calls from the public and is designed to receive information relating to persons who have or are believed to have been involved in the incident.
Each police force has a capacity to provide staff and resources to activate a Casualty Bureau Incident Room. It is staffed by both police staff and police officers who are both trained on the H.O.L.M.E.S (Home Office Large Major Enquiry System) and have received Casualty Bureau training.
What is a Survivors Reception Centre [SURC]?
Set up by police in conjunction with the Local Authority to provide a safe area for survivors not requiring acute medical treatment. It can offer first aid, immediate shelter and welfare and signpost to further support. The police will also document and interview (or make arrangements to interview survivors at a later date), they will also call members of the survivors’ families or provide the ability for the survivors themselves to call their families. The documentation team will also pass information regarding other people who were with the survivors to Casualty Bureau.
What is a Family and Friends Reception Centre [FFRC]?
These centres are set up by the Police and supported by the Local Authority. They are a focal point for relatives and friends of those believed to be affected by the incident where they can go to seek information and practical and emotional support. Family and friends can also be provided with or sign-posted to information about other support services available.
