Fire Protection Flashcards
Which areas of the aircraft have fire detection? Which have fire extinguishing?
Detection: Engines, APU Forward and Aft Cargo, Lavatories, Main Gear Well
Suppression: Engines, APU, Forward and Aft Cargo, Lavatories
What does an illuminated FIRE WARN (red) light indicate? When does the light extinguish?
Illuminates during a system test or:
Engine 1/2 Fire
APU Fire
FWD or AFT Cargo Fire
Main Wheel Fire
What does an ENG 1 OVERHEAT (amber) light indicate? When does it extinguish?
Indicates the temperature of a detector has increased to a predetermined limit and has sensed an overheat condition.
Will extinguish once the temperature drops below the onset temperature.
What powers overheat and fire DETECTION? What powers overheat and fire EXTINGUISHING
Fire Detection is powered by the Battery Bus
Fire Extinguishing powered by the Hot Battery Bus
How many detector loops do the engines have? How many bottles?
2 loops per engine
2 total bottles that can be discharged into either Engine
How are Fire Detection Loop failures indicated?
FAULT (amber) light if both loops have failed or A or B is selected and the selected loop has failed or
A or B (operative loop) is selected, with the other loop inoperative and the selected loop fails.
There is no Flight Deck indication of a single loop failure.
How does an Engine or APU switch operate? When does it unlock?
Operated by Pulling the Engine Fire.
Illumination of the Engine Fire Switch or ENG OVERHEAT light unlocks the switch.
Can also be manually overridden by the Manual Override Switch
What Systems does pulling an Engine Fire Switch affect?
Pulling the switch up closes:
-Engine and Spar Fuel shutoff valve
-Engine Bleed Air Valve
-Hydraulic Fluid Shutoff Valve
Trips Generator control relay
Disables thrust reverser
Arms one discharge squib
Allows switch to be rotated for discharge.
What are the components of the APU Fire Detection and Extinguishing system?
Single Loop detector and one APU Fire Extinguisher Bottle
Where is the APU Fire Protection Panel? How is that panel used?
In the Main Wheel Well.
Pulling the APU Fire Control Handle and using the APU BOTTLE DISCHARGE switch.
On the Fire Protection panel, what does FAULT/INOP test? What does the FIRE/OVHT test?
FAULT/INOP: testing fault detection
FIRE/OVHT: testing overheat and fire detection systems
How is a Lower Cargo Compartment fire detected?
With smoke detectors in a dual loop configuration. Both loops must sense smoke to cause an alert.
What does an illuminated DETECTOR FAULT (amber) light indicate on the Cargo Fire panel
When illuminated with the DET SELECT switches in normal, indicates one or more lower cargo detectors in the loops have failed
