Fire Detection and Protection Flashcards
What areas of the aircraft have Fire Detection systems?
-Engines (also overheat)
-APU
-Cargo (fwd/aft lower, and main deck in freighters)
-Main Wheel Well
-Lavatories
What areas of the aircraft have Fire Extinguishing/Suppression systems?
-Engines (2 bottles)
-APU (1 bottle)
-Lower Cargo (1 or 2 bottles)
-Lavatory (1 bottle per waste bin)
What does an illuminated MASTER FIRE WARN (red) light indicate?
-Engine 1 or 2 fire,
-APU fire,
-Cargo fire,
-Wheel Well (main) fire,
-Fire test
Extinguishes by pushing either MASTER FIRE WARN or BELL CUTOUT
What causes the Fire Warning Bell to sound? How can it be silenced?
Sounds during Fire Warning
-Engine 1 or 2 fire,
-APU fire,
-Cargo fire,
-Wheel well (main) fire,
-Fire test
Silenced by pushing either MASTER FIRE WARN or BELL CUTOUT
What does an illuminated ENG OVERHEAT (amber) indicate?
Engine overheat condition
Fire loop(s) exceeds onset temperature for overheat
Extinguishes when temperature drops below onset temperature
How many engine fire extinguisher bottles are there? Which engine(s) can they be discharged into?
2 fire bottles (Halon) located in left main wheel well
Either bottle can be discharged into either engine
Note: Thermal relief (130C) discharges bottles into main wheel well area
What powers the engine overheat and fire detection systems? Engine fire extinguishing?
Engine
Fire detection and overheat – Battery Bus
Fire extinguishing – Hot Battery Bus
What does pulling an engine fire switch do?
4 light overhead panels + T/R + squib
Closes engine and spar fuel shutoff valves,
Trips generator control relay and breaker,
Closes hydraulic shutoff valve,
Closes engine bleed air valve,
Deactivates respective engine thrust reverser,
Arms squib on fire bottles,
(Allows fire switch to be rotated)
What does rotating the engine fire switch do?
Electrically fires a squib
Discharging a fire bottle into the respective engine
Rotating engine fire switch in opposite direction fires second bottle
How many detector loops does each engine have? What do the loops provide?
2 loops per engine
Provide overheat and fire detection
What are the indications of a single loop failure for engine fire detection?
There are no flight deck indications of a single loop failure
Failed loop automatically deselected, remaining loop functions as a single-loop detector
Except during a fire test (FAULT and an engine fails to detect an overheat/fire)
What are the indications of a dual loop failure for engine fire detection?
FAULT illuminates
Engine fire detection unavailable for one or both engines
What does an illuminated FAULT (amber) light indicate? When does it illuminate/extinguish?
Engine fire and overheat detection inoperative for one or both engines
Illuminates if:
-Dual loop failure with OVHT DET in NORMAL, or
-A or B loop failure if OVHT DET in respective position
-Does NOT illuminate MASTER CAUTION or OVHT/DET
Does not extinguish until system is repaired
What does an illuminated ENGINE FIRE (red) switch indicate?
Respective engine fire
Both or selected loop(s) have reached the fire onset temperature
Or, Fire Test
What are the indications of an engine fire?
Master FIRE WARN (x2)
Fire Warning Bell
Engine Fire Switch (red) illuminates
Respective Engine Overheat alerts
–Master Caution (x2)
–OVHT/DET
–ENGINE OVERHEAT
