What are the 7 basic goods
Life, knowledge, play, aesthetic experience, friendship, practical reasonableness, religion
What did finnis believe about the goods?
They are all intrinsically good and are all equal in value, and can’t be measured
Where do the basic goods exist?
They exist outside of human thought and we put them in reality
In finnis natural law what is moral and immoral
Moral act is one that involves any of the goods and an immoral act is one that directly harms a basic good
What is the difference between theoretical and practical reason?
Theoretical reason describes what is true whilst practical reason describes how to act
What are the 9 requirements of practical reason?
- The good of practical reasonableness
- A coherent life plan
- No preference among values
- No preference among persons
- Be committed
- Relevance of consequences
- Respect for every basic value
- Act in the common good
- Follow one’s conscience
What happens if two statements contradict?
If two contradict then one must be false
What does finnis think of immigration?
He disagrees with the lack of control over immigration, and believes that western civilisation is experiencing reverse colonialism
How would the basic goods respond to immigration?
It would allow immigration if they were fleeing danger and life was at risk, but could contradict with the common good
