according to emotivists what are moral statements?
ethical statements are neither analytic or synthetic, but rather express the feelings of the speaker and nothing more, there are no claims to truth in them
what else is emotivism known as?
boo/hurrah theory since moral proportions express nothing more than personal approval or disapproval
how does emotivism explain morality?
explains why people disagree about morality because everyone has different emotional responses that can be subject to change and no universal statement can ever be agreed upon
how did emotivism develop?
developed out of Vienna circle who also developed logical positivism, ethical statements must be tested to hold value. however statements such as ‘murder is wrong’ cannot be tested by sense and would be an expression of feelings
how is emotivism too reductionist?
it reduces moral statements to emotional utterances, meaning that there is no basis for forming moral principles to live our lives by, they also give no basis for resolving moral differences
what is the challenge of not allowing universal right and wrong?
emotivism suggests that all normative theories are mistaken and does not allow universal right or wrong.
this could mean you can fail to make the distinction between disliking genocide and disliking curry
does emotivism believe ethical language is meaningful?
ethical language id factually and scientifically meaningless and are just emotion
