Finishing processes- finishes Flashcards
Give examples of chemical finishes
- Stain resistance
- Water resistance
- Flame retardency
- Crease resistance
Why are finishes used?
To improve the performance of a material
What is stain resistance? (give uses)
- won’t discolour if staining liquids are dropped on to the fabric
- stops the absorption of water and dirt
- stiffens fabric
What is water resistance? (give uses)
- repels water
- durable finish
- raincoats and umbrella
What is flame retardency? (give uses)
- so that it doesn’t catch fire
- on children’s wear
- firefighter clothing
- makes fabric stiffer and weaker
What is crease resistance? (give uses)
- making sure fabric doesn’t crease after coming in contact with water
- results in fabric being soft and smooth
- wool
What are the different types of finishes?
- mechanical
- chemical
- smart
Give examples of mechanical finishes
- brushing
- calendering
- heat-setting
Give examples of smart finishes (only need to know one)
- anti-bacterial finishes
- coating
- biological finishes
- thermochromatic (need to know)
What is brushing? (give uses)
- Fabric passed through wire rollers which brush the fabric to leave it soft and fluffy
- cotton, nylon, polyester
What is calendering? (give uses)
- Heated rollers press the surface of the fabric to compact it giving it a shine
- cotton
What is an antibacterial finishing? (give uses)
- making sure microorganisms are killed
- used in hospitals
What is a biological finishing? (give uses)
- uses enzymes to change fabric’s appearance
- stone washed denim effect on denim
What is a thermochromatic finishing? (give uses)
- change colour depending on the change in temperature
- childrens’ clothes
- firefighter clothing
What are nanomaterials?
- self-cleaning textile surfaces or protective insulating clothing
- tiny structure
- strength
- electrical characteristics
Give examples of integrated electronics with textiles designs
- sensors
- light emitting garments
- roll up illuminated mat
- lights (LEDs we worked with in year 9)
