Finishing processes- dyeing and printing Flashcards
What is dyeing?
- dipping yarn, fibre or fabric into a colour pigment to change the colour
- chemicals are used to fix the colour so that it doesn’t fade when washed
What are some of the dyeing methods?
only need to know one hand and one commercial method
- chemical dyeing
- natural dyeing
- industrial dyeing
- dip-dyeing
- resist dyeing
- tie dyeing
- batik
- tritik
- shibori
What is chemical dyeing?
- pigment dyes with salts added to fix them
- can be made up of water
What is natural dyeing?
- vegetable pigment dyes
What is industrial dyeing? (industrial process)
- fibres dyed
- polymer is coloured
- fibres dyed and turned into yarns
- undid fabrics can be dyed
What is dip dyeing?
- part of the fabric is dipped into dye
- then can be dipped into different coloured dyes to mix the colours
What is resist dyeing?
- part of the fabric is made to resist dye when dipping
What is tie dyeing?
- wrapping or having the fabric tied
- then dipping it into many dyes to give different colours
What is batik?
- using wax to make the dye resist going there
What is tritik?
- stitching parts to make the dye resist going there
What is shibori?
- dye added to folded fabric and then steamed to set the dye
What is printing?
adding colour to make patterns on fabric
What are printing methods?
only need to know one hand and one commercial method
- block printing
- screen printing
- engraved roller printing
- transfer printing
- stencilling
- digital printing
What is block printing?
- blocks are made into patters
- these are dipped into a dye
- then these blocks are pressed onto fabrics leaving the pattern, in many places
What is screen printing?
- a pattern is cut out maybe using laser cutter
- there is a screen on top of a wooden outlined board
- the pattern is placed under the screen (mesh)
- paint/dye is placed in the mesh and squeezed in using a squeegee
What is engraved roller printing? (industrial process)
- metal rollers engraved with patterns go over fabrics
What is transfer printing?
- heat transfer printing, which prints the pattern on paper with carefully selected dyes
What is stencilling?
- applying colour to fabric in definite patterns or designs using stencils
What is digital printing?
- printing smaller designs onto garments
