Timber Preservatives

A

Are applied to wood to help repel water and moisture, and in some cases resist insect attack

Q

Timber Varnish

A

Varnish can achieve a similar finish look to polish, but gives better protection to the surface
• Different types i.e. Modern Polyurethane, acrylic
• Build up in layers, each layer drying before sanding
• Final coat can have a wax applied for a high quality finish

Q

Timber oils

A

Applied to enhance the natural oils in the wood already
• applied with a cloth
• built up over layers
• Oils soaks into the timber - enhancing its ability to repel moisture without creating a layer on top of the wood
• Needs to be recoated

Q

Timber paints

A

Give a solid colour finish to a surface of the wood
• Starts with a primer coat to seal wood, undercoat, then layer up the paint

Q

Examples of timber paints

A
  • Oil paints - tougher/durable
  • Acrylic paints - dry quickly and non toxic
  • Applied - Aerosol and roller. Emulsion often more suitable for brush
  • Commercial - spray finishes - specialist equipment

Q

Differences between water- based finishes and oil based finishes

A
  • Water based finishes provide a clear finish and have a low odour however oil based finishes give an amber glow and give off strong odours
  • Recoating with water based finishes takes less time than oil based finishes - water is 2 hours and oil is 5 hours

Q

Process of Plastic dip coating

A
  • The part being coated must be cleaned
  • Then heated to 200°c (in a fluidised Polyethylene powder) for a few seconds
  • left with a smooth, shiny, colourful surface that protects the metal
17
Q

Advantages of plastic dip coating

A
  • Left with smooth, shinny and colourful surface

* Protects the metal

18
Q

Disadvantages of plastic dip coating

A
  • Difficult to remove

* Pinholes can appear due to it being a thin coat

19
Q

Process of Galvanising

A
  • Steel is dipped into a bath of Molten Zinc

* Leaving the surface with a bright grey colour

20
Q

Advantages of galvanising

A
  • Useful for things that are outdoors

* Flame resistant

21
Q

Disadvantages of galvanising

A
  • Triggers corrosion

* Rough patches

22
Q

Process of electroplating/Anodising

A

Plating one metal onto another via hydrolysis

23
Q

Advantages of Electroplating/Anodising

A
  • Aesthetically pleasing

* Prevents corrosion of metal

24
Q

Disadvantages of electroplating/anodising

A
  • Costly and time consuming

* Solution needs to be disposed safely as it is dangerous to the environment
